Learning
…a process that leads to change, which occurs as a result of experience, and increases the potential for improved performance…
How Learning Works: Seven Research-Based Principles for Smart Teaching (2010). p. 3.
Learning is a process with a goal – improved performance and positive change. We learn through reflecting upon our experience. Improved performance and positive change encompasses skills, beneficial habits, and new behaviors. Our learning increases through learning experiences and ongoing reflection.
Two Ways We Learn
Learning can be passive or active. Passive learning include lectures, presentations, talks, and similar activities where one individual delivers information an audience who is primarily listening. Active learning incorporates activities that facilitate active engagement with what is the learner receives, so learners can effectively internalize learning by engaging material through hands-on and interactive learning experiences.
Active learning experiences are interactive and iterative – processes that happen over time as we integrate new information and experiences into what we previously have learned and known.
In today’s connected world of computer networks, learning platforms, podcasts, and smart devices, we have many opportunities to consume information. Learning requires more than information consumption – it requires integrating new knowledge and information into our existing mental framework and intentionally pursuing change. ![]() Phil |
